Dry Needling & Acupuncture

Western medical dry needling is a therapeutic modality used by physiotherapists and other health professionals. It is an adaptation of traditional Chinese acupuncture using current, evidence-based knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. It involves the insertion of fine pins into specific areas of the body and is used in conjunction with various other physiotherapy treatments to alleviate pain and promote optimal function.

How does acupuncture/ dry needling work?

  • Primarily by stimulating the nervous system (local nerves) and has both central and peripheral nervous system effects that help to alleviate pain.

What should I expect from acupuncture/ dry needling?

  • Most people describe a dull pinching sensation upon insertion of the acupuncture pin that subsides quickly. However, depending on the person and the region of the body, other people report not feeling the insertion of the pin at all.

  • This can be followed by a local region of sensation (tingling, warmth, pins & needles) that tends to subside in a matter of minutes.

  • The goal of dry needling treatment is to help alleviate pain. A successful treatment should result in some decrease in patient’s pain. Depending on the chronicity of the condition, however, some individuals will require multiple treatments before they notice a reduction in their pain intensity.
